Cues & Variations Handout – Spanish Turn

This movement is part of the Shambling Shimmies  level 2 vocabulary.

SPANISH TURN

Classification:  Slow

Basic Cue:  Arms in 2nd, at least 1 floreo, then down to one hand in front (in first) and one behind.

Variations:

  • The first time this move is cued from the front it is cued normally which cues a half turn only and transfers the lead to the back, who can now cue whatever moves they wish while facing backwards until they are ready to come back around to face front which is done with the same Basic Cue.
  • The second time (optional) this move is cued from the front it cues a full turn.
  • After both a half turn and a full turn have been cued, if the move were cued again, it would start over at a half turn.

Notes:

During this turn, the body stays straight up and down (no leaning into the turn) and you do not rise onto your toes (i.e. your head should stay in one place throughout the turn sort of as if someone was grabbing you by the head and twisting you around by it.)

New Videos!

The monthly Satchel’s show was held last week, and we had a blast!  Next month is going to be even better because we’re going to be doing something special for Halloween!  But, for the time being, while we get that all cooked up, enjoy some videos.

The first up is the video of Julia’s solo:

And then Heather’s:

And there are also several photos from the student performances, and the guest performance by Wyldfyre Dance!  Check them out here.

We’re planning something fun for the Halloween show at Satchel’s this year! (Oct 25)  There’s going to be a little bit of everything: zombies, ghosts, skeletons, and spooky black cats.

I’ll post more about the other characters as we progress into the month of October, but today we’re going to talk about the ghosts!  The level 1 students will be dancing as ghosts and skeletons, and we recently finished the ghost costume prototype.

The students will wear white pants and tops (and skirts, scarves, or other accessories if they have them), and we’ll be providing some additional accessories to spookify the whole thing.  The add-ons consist of a belt, shrug, wrist danglies, and a headband – all made out of ribbons, various types of yarn, and shredded sheer fabric.

The makeup is fairly simple – a white base with black ovals over the eyes and mouth.

Without further ado – here are some pictures!

New Small Group Class Starting Soon! Soloing Basics

We are happy to announce that a new small group class (capped at 6 students) is going to be starting in Gainesville, FL on Oct 6!  The course will be 6 weeks long, with classes on Thursdays from 6-7 pm.

This course will give students instruction and practice time on various concepts important to dancing solos, relating to transitions, musicality, use of space, and more.  The information will be presented within the context of dancing short solos within the tribal group dance framework, however the information will be useful for planning longer solos as well.

To see the syllabus for this course, go here.

The registration fee for the course is $90, which may be paid by cash, check or paypal.  (Payment arrangements are available.)  To register for the course, please use the contact link to send us a note!
